Contemporary take on Elizabethan hair- Wedding hair design

So today we had to design and create a contemporary hairstyle inspired by Elizabethans. The style either had to be a wedding design or a high fashion catwalk style.
I chose to create a wedding design. I incorporated plaits, curls and then created an up-do.

I created a middle section where the parting would be and then did a french braid. Then when this got to the edge near the forehead, I split the braid in two and continued to braid these two parts. I then secured them with a bobby pin. I then french braided two sections at each side of the face bringing them back and loosening the braid so I could blend it in with the back design. I then sectioned these two so that I could begin curling the entire Katie head. Once I had completed the entire Katie head. I then got the middle section and put it into a little elastic band. I then pinned it so it stuck up and then let the curls fall over. I then twisted the other loose hairs into the loose bun until it was all secure. For this I used bobby pins. I then secured the 2 braids from the side and tucked them into the bun loosening the plaits a little more to create a more romantic look. I then got the two braids I started with and tucked them into the 2 side braids and then secured them with bobby pins. This created a crown like shape.

I was inspired by the image of Jessica Alba above. I love the loose braid and floaty style of this up do.I was very happy with how my hairstyle came out. I did struggle with my idea though at first. I definitely want to incorporate the front detail into my final design. I think it looks quite regal and is an interesting twist on Elizabethan braiding.

Inspiration for final design

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/56/61/90/56619098bea1a3aaa10ddce848b69cde.jpg
Image 1. I love this hairstyle. You can see they have featured a lot of padding and back brushing. It reminds me of Elizabethans not only because of this but because of the plaits height and the amount of ornamentation. This feels to me like a messy version of Elizabethan hair. Almost whimsical in design.
I love these looks. I love the deconstructed take on that big intricate Elizabethan design. I really love ornaments in hair and I'm going to incorporate that into my designs. I feel that it will give my design a luxurious feel and a richness. I love that aspect of Elizabethan fashion Everything was big, luxurious and rich! Everything they wore was drenched in jewels and luxurious fabrics. I really am inspired by this. These images demonstrate that perfectly.

The image above feels very Elizabethan. The red, over the top, frizzy hair the pale skin and youthful look. This is a deconstructed version.

This is very clean and finished. This the opposite of the above images. With the use of padding and shaping the stylist is able to create a very avant garde look. This constructed neat look is very strong and reminds me of the elizabethan era hairstyles because of the large dimensions and shapes.

This again is very broken down and fluffy. I love the new take on the simple braid. They have pulled it out and created a very contemporary Elizabethan style.

This reminds me of Elizabethan hair because mainly the height and elaborate design. Although this is messy it looks almost like a hat with the way its constructed. The pale hair at the front looks to me to be shaped almost like a fan folded material like a huge ruff in the hair but a messy version.

My first attempt at Elizabethan hair

My first attempt was challenging. Tara (my model) had really healthy and soft hair so it was difficult to work with. After I crimped it Tara's hair became more coarse and became a little easier to style so I  sectioned her hair first. I began at the back and sectioned the back section into three more sections. I french plaited the outer two sections of the back section then I made the middle section into a bun and rapped the outer 2 plaits around the bun. I then began on the middle section of Tara's hair. I crimped it  all the way through, back brushed it and then secured the rats in place. This helped create the heart shape and to give Tara's hair more height and volume. I then started to curl the front section through and pin the curls to set them.
I feel that I understand and can execute the basic techniques needed to create this look. I think my section skills are getting stronger and that if I practise my skills can only grow. I do however feel that my idea today was a little too complicated and fussy for the little amount of time we had. I struggled to hide the clips and loose hairs. I feel that I could prepare my idea better the next time now that I have an understanding of time management. I need to practise my technique and hopefully I'll become better at problem solving but I really enjoyed the practise. I really enjoy doing hair and I'm looking forward to progressing and learning more.
I found today really useful and it highlighted my strengths and weaknesses which I need in order to develop my ideas and techniques.
I'm feeling really inspired today and I'm enjoying researching my ideas I'm looking forward to practising my contemporary idea's next week.

New and Old and how they have inspired my final look.

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/2e/99/59/2e9959e1864161653b7380e1362f514d.jpg
It is clear That the modern age is still very much influenced by Elizabethan style and culture! Catwalks, ad campaigns and fashion shoots are soaked with Elizabethan inspired hairstyles and adornments. I have been looking a lot at Avant Garde hairstyling and the influence is clear to see. Avant Garde hairstyling is all about big, imaginative, artistic, structural and innovative design. Combining different techniques to create hair art and this was exactly what the Elizabethans hairstyle's were about. I find it interesting that in the golden age it was totally normal for women to go out with these 'out there' hairstyles but now we have to put the style into a box to consider it acceptable. Most rich and famous women of this modern time wouldn't have the confidence to pull off some of these styles but there are a few that are creative  and confident enough to experiment.

I love this look above. It is very elizabethan with the shape, colour, and of course with the clothes and neck ruffs. They have used padding and twisting to create this shape. It looks quite masculine to me but I like that because it feels strong. I really want to incorporate this into my look. Maybe by taking this shape and putting around the back of the hair.

This is what elizabethan hair is all about. Big, bold and structured. They have used the hair to make a collar which of course was a favourite for elizabethan fashion. This is an incredibly elaborate avant garde hair look. The image itself is very strong and almost has the energy of a bull about to charge.

The frizz and crimped hair with the braids is definately inspired by elizabethans. the braiding and texture in this has inspired my final look.

I love the shape to this and how they have been separated by that braid. I definitely want to incorporate this braid into my final design but alter it slightly.

The padding in this hair design is beautiful and very linked to Elizabethan hairstyles.  I think it's really interesting and neat. This has inspired my final design because I like the way the padding has rolls. I want to incorporate this at the back of my hair design.

Padding in this elizabethan hairstyle was very fashionable at this time. they would use hair rats to make these shapes. The hair rats would be made out of rolls of old hair moulded together to create the right shape. This would be really useful to me when creating the large padded shapes at the back of my hair design but I would use crepe wool or couch roll in old stockings.

I love the elaborate design in this portrait above. I really want to incorporate jewels and accessories into my final design. I'm obsessed with diamonds and jewels but I can't afford them so its lucky that there are so many amazing costume jewellery pieces available to buy from accessory shops today. Its a great way of dressing up outfits or hairstyles. I want to incorporate this into my final design as my  lady in waiting was worldy and had money (being elizabeths main carer) so I feel this would fit quite well. They also inspire me a lot as I love the colour and shape of them and what they represent symbolically I think is beautiful.

Again I love the regality of this image. Elizabeth was older here and as she ages her clothes, jewels, makeup and hair became more elaborate. The crown in this image has really inspired my final look as I would love to build a crown out of hair at the front of the hair. To achieve this I am going to look up more avant garde styles to see how this idea can be realised.

http://listverse.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/65.jpg
Elizabeth looks quite young here. I love her large dress and the elaborate pearls and jewels that decorate it. I want to see if I can almost imitate her sleeves with my hair design. I want to create rolls at the back of my hair design and maybe decorate them with diamonds somehow to imitate these sleeves with the fluffy round shape and gemstones.

Elizabethan women and the modern woman.

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/0f/13/f0/0f13f061c11c945999b5cd93d7ee5df9.jpg

Elizabethan hairstyles were incredibly intricate. They were a necessary part of being a lady of a higher class. The more elaborate the hairstyle and outfit, the more attention you received at court which was very important when trying to achieve success. You had to keep up appearances. Ladies needed the newest designs and women usually used Queen Elizabeth as their inspiration as she was the style icon of the day.
The hairstyles used were layered with different styling techniques, plaits, buns, curls, extensions and featured very elaborate hair accessories. The head pieces and hairstyles were created to compliment the dress the lady was wearing. They would adorn there hair with pearls, jewels and embroidery.
Today its quite similar when it comes to women with money or even money and fame and women with less. Women that have more money tend to have access to newer styles and techniques. They also can afford better hairstylists and afford having their hair done more often. Women with less money can afford to experiment thanks to cheaper and more accessible hair products but having your hair coloured, cut or styled is mostly a luxury. Your everyday woman usually only has her hair done up for proms, weddings or other special occasions.
They were so creative in the Elizabethan times with regards to there fashion choices and hairstyles. They put a lot of effort in and I have to say that as time has moved on, the modern women definitely take's a more relaxed approach. Less effort is put into hair now a days. women tend to wear their hair down or up in a pony tail or other simple type of up-do. Some women do a little extra but in comparison to Elizabethan women its not nearly as elaborate.
In modern times the only places you see such avant garde styles is on the catwalk and in fashion editorials. This goes to show how fashion savvy Elizabethan women were.
Its easy to see why modern women and hairstylists use Elizabethan styles as inspiration for different styles and designs. I see it all the time in magazines and on the Internet. plaits and bun combinations and curly and frizzy looks. I've included some looks of contemporary hair styles that I like and that remind me of Elizabethan hair styles.

Crimping with crimping irons.

In todays lesson we learned about padding and shaping and how to achieve this kind of look. One of the ways to achieve this today is to crimp the hair with hair crimper's. You begin by sectioning the hair and then you crimp section by section.

Padding and shaping using the rat.

Photo's above.

Once you have crimped the desired area you begin to back brush your sections from underneath (this helps keep the end result clean and finished and makes it easier to style and shape). One of the queens favourite methods was using hair rats (pads filled with hair) This was because they created volume and height and were easy to shape. To put the hair rat in the hair,  you have to section the hair again so that you have hair to go over the rat. I also put a french plait behind this section (where the rat will sit) to make a foundation that will help the rat stay in place. To create my rat I got a stocking filled it with wool and tied the ends. You can however use crepe hair, cotton wool or any other mould able material. I applied the rat buy placing it over the french braid and pinning it in place. I then combed the hair over it and pinned the hair in place.

Outcome.

I definitely need to practise with this as my speed was slow. I definitely found the crimping, sectioning and french braid part easy to pick up but the hair rat was challenging to apply. I also had to change my back brushing technique as I used to just brush the hair back and forth for this technique. I now hugely see the benefit in just brushing the hair back slowly and precisely.  This gives a much stronger structure to the hair and makes my job of shaping the hair a lot easier.
I think this crimping technique is a great contemporary way of achieving these Elizabethan hairstyle's. It can be quite a frizzy look but can also look very clean and finished if this technique is applied in the right way.

Zigzag Crimping using the figure 8 method on a bobby pin.

We were then shown how to crimp the hair using bobby pins. This gives either a very precise crimp or if brushed out, can create a frizzy youthful look. This can take a long time to do, so you would need to make sure you had enough time. It is very precise but the end result is worth it. To create this look you again, section the hair and taking very small pieces you take a pin and rap the hair around it using the figure 8 method. You then pin the bottom to hold it in place and then place the straightening iron over it for a couple of seconds. Let the hair cool down and then un-clip and pull out the pin. the end result is a very precise zig zag shape.

This has been used quite frequently in fashion to create a natural Afro look. The more you brush it the bigger your hair gets.

Outcome.

I was able to see Helen (my lecturer) demonstrate this technique. I then practiced this myself and found that although this is a longer process, I much prefer the outcome. This technique can create a  larger dimension to the hair. Its a fiddly technique to get the hang of but again practice will improve my ability and speed in time.

Queen Elizabeth: The Golden Age

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7e0VJLRRGCmyC1Vv2YwooDTpLnVC24Q_2r2BxUQEghoepOggTimlVa5Q2zUl6RiJNLrLgo53T0Sqr1zdHjjYvLyFoc6_gVzX7hcA4Q4_xnRjn0Qi4HKX82SkqtA8K8Y_y-pWyJsGF_bSi/s1600/ElizabethGoldenAge9.jpg

This was sequel to the first Elizabeth Movie starring Cate Blanchett. This film explored the second half of Queen Elizabeth's Reign. Although again loosely based on historical events it was a good example of the fashion and style of that era. Referenced from historical portraiture it was a beautiful showcase of elaborate feathered hair pieces, bejewelled crowns and tight, weaved, plaited and curled hairstyles. These inspired upper class women of that time to emulate the queens style.

The 2nd film's style was a lot richer in colour and accessories. the  hairstyles were actually created by wigs. At this point in Queen Elizabeth's reign she had shaved her head, inspired by the virgin Mary, she wished to become as pure as Mary, almost reborn as the new virgin Queen. The wig makers on the film were, Terry Jarius, Ray Marston and Carol Waugh. They did an amazing job creating wigs and headdresses that  complimented the dresses Cate Blanchett wore in the film.

Still an influence.

Its amazing to me how still to this day, fashion is still influenced by Elizabethan times. The no eyebrows was a huge trend in 2014. Model's strutted down Alexander Wang's runways with bleached brows and pale skin. Givenchy's Fall/winter 2014 campaign featured no brow models. The edgy look has remained edgy and timeless. Its bold and strong so its only fitting that the most influential artists continue to use this historical trend.

Superstars like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Beyonce have also clearly been influenced by elizabethan times. Re-creating the regal theme and style of the times. I think because of the beautifully elaborate designs of Queen Elizabeth's dresses she will always be an influence and be referenced in fashion and current trends.
